How to Get to Batam from Singapore
Batam is reachable by high-speed ferry from two terminals in Singapore — HarbourFront and Tanah Merah — with journey times of roughly 45 to 60 minutes, depending on your destination port and operator. On the Batam side, ferries arrive at Batam Centre, Sekupang, Nongsapura, or Waterfront City, with Batam Centre being the most commonly used and best connected to the rest of the island. There are a good number of daily sailings on this route — combined across operators, you'll typically find 25 or more departures each way, so same-week or even same-day bookings are usually workable outside of peak periods.
HarbourFront vs Tanah Merah: Which Terminal Should You Use?
This is the question we get most, and the honest answer is: it depends on where you're starting from, not which terminal is "better." HarbourFront sits right beside HarbourFront MRT and VivoCity, making it the more convenient option if you're coming from central or western Singapore, and it also tends to have more sailings per day. Tanah Merah, about 10 minutes from Changi Airport, is more convenient if you're flying in or based in the east. Ferry fares are broadly similar between the two terminals, so route choice usually comes down to travel time to the terminal itself rather than ticket price.
Ferry Operators Compared
Three main operators run the Singapore–Batam route: BatamFast (currently the largest, with the most daily departures), Sindo Ferry, and Majestic Fast Ferry. All three cover the core routes to Batam Centre and Sekupang, with slightly different schedules and port coverage, so it's worth checking timings against your preferred sailing window rather than defaulting to one operator. One-way fares typically run between S$30 and S$50, with round-trip tickets often working out better value than booking each leg separately — expect to pay a bit more during weekends, school holidays, and peak periods.
Visa & Entry Requirements
Good news for Singaporean travellers: Indonesia offers visa-free entry for up to 30 days for tourism purposes, so no visa application is needed for a standard Batam trip. Two things are worth double-checking before you go: your passport must have at least 6 months' validity from your travel date, and Indonesia requires all arriving travellers to complete an electronic Customs Declaration (e-CD) online in advance — this is a quick form, but it's one first-time travellers often miss until they're at the counter, so it's worth doing the night before.
